چکیده
Using the numerical solution to the time-dependent Dirac equation we show that the effect of relativity on the usual Larmor period for an electron in a magnetic field can be enhanced drastically if a suitably scaled and aligned static electric field is added to the interaction. This electric field does not change the electron’s speed but leads to an elliptical spin precession due to relativity. This spin precession is accompanied by a positiondependent spin distribution.

Chopped nonlinear magneto-optic rotation: A technique for precision measurements
We have developed a technique for precise measurement of small magnetic fields using nonlinear magneto-optic rotation (NMOR). The technique relies on the resonant laser beam being chopped. During the on time, the atoms are optically pumped into an aligned ground state (Δm= 2 coherence). During the off time, they freely precess around the magnetic field at the Larmor frequency. If the on-off mod...
متن کاملChaos and Maps in Relativistic Dynamical Systems
The basic work of Zaslavskii et al showed that the classical non-relativistic electromagnetically kicked oscillator can be cast into the form of an iterative map on the phase space; the resulting evolution contains a stochastic flow to unbounded energy. Subsequent studies have formulated the problem in terms of a relativistic charged particle in interaction with the electromagnetic field. We re...
متن کاملMeasurement of Linear Stark Interference in Hg
We present measurements of Stark interference in the 6S0 → 6P1 transition in Hg, a process whereby a static electric field E mixes magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole couplings into an electric dipole transition, leading to E-linear energy shifts similar to those produced by a permanent atomic electric dipole moment (EDM). The measured interference amplitude, aSI = (aM1 + aE2) = (5.8 ± 1.5)...
متن کاملImaging electric conductivity and conductivity anisotropy via eddy currents induced by pulsed field gradients
PURPOSE: The capacity to measure conductivity and conductivity anisotropy in vivo and non-invasively has practical significance in a number of biomedical applications. For example, large changes of tissue conductivity have been reported in tumors, strokes and myocardial infarction. Considerable early efforts were focused on the measurement of injected low-frequency currents (1-3). Electric prop...
متن کاملZero-field and Larmor spinor precessions in a neutron polarimeter experiment
We present a neutron polarimetric experiment where two kinds of spinor precessions are observed: one is induced by different total energy of neutrons (zero-field precession) and the other is induced by a stationary guide field (Larmor precession). A characteristic of the former is the dependence of the energy-difference, which is in practice tuned by the frequency of the interacting oscillating...
